Teammate Evaluation
Overview
In this activity, students give and receive feedback on the teamwork experience, so that each member of the team recognises their strengths as a team member and knows how they might improve in the future.
Useful for
- Reflecting on teamwork experiences
- Improving students’ ability to give and receive constructive criticism
- Creating a sense of individual accountability within group projects
- Strengthening bonds between students
Materials
- Create an account with TEAMMATES (an online peer evaluation system) and set up a peer evaluation session
- Modify the instructions and sample teammate evaluation questions as needed to suit the context of your class context
- Explain the purpose of the teammate evaluation activity and explain how you will use the evaluations students provide. For example, is the teammate evaluation purely formative – a tool for identifying and addressing potential problems within a team? Or will you use the teammate evaluations to calculate students’ grades for the final team project?
- Distribute the Teammate Evaluate Instructions and give students time to complete their evaluations.
- Release the teammate evaluation results to students once you have had a chance to review the comments.
- Invite students to reflect on the feedback they received. You might ask students to write 150-300 words answering the following questions:
- Summarise the feedback your teammates provided.
- Do you think your teammates’ feedback was fair? Why or why not? Were they too critical of you? Too easy on you? Explain.
- How will you use the feedback you received in the second half of the semester? You might write about weaknesses you want to address, or you might write about strengths you want to leverage.
- The teammate evaluations can be evaluated based on completion: students receive full marks if their evaluation is complete and respectfully written.
- The teammate evaluations can be used when grading the final project. Teachers may base a portion (5-30%) of the final project grade on teammate evaluations. To allow students a chance to improve, ensure students complete peer evaluations at least twice during the semester.
Teachers are encouraged to review all comments before making them available to students, to ensure that no hateful messages are passed on to students.
Teachers can distribute paper copies of the teammate evaluation form instead of having students complete their teammate evaluations online. The paper forms will be faster for students to complete, but will require a lot more time from the teacher (who will need to compile the responses manually).
